There are 2 possible routes that will allow you to get a grant for installation of Solar panels but the criteria is strict. These are the Energy Company obligation Scheme aka ECO4 and the home upgrade grant. They will provide up to £14K towards a new solar installation. In simple terms ECO4 is a national scheme and the Home upgrade Grant is operated by 45 local authorities.
To Take advantage of ECO4 your heating must be powered by Electricity, i.e it cannot be heated by gas.. Examples are heat pumps, electric boiler and electric heaters. You will then be able to access the scheme if
Your household earns less than £31,000 per year
You've been referred by your energy provider, local authority, or doctor
You receive certain benefits
To apply you will need to get in touch with a company that is obliged to carry out ECO4 Improvements, which is most of the major Electricity providers in the United Kingdom. Ofgem has a list of participating companies.
Home Upgrade Grant
From April 2023 to March 2025, 45 local authorities in England are able to hand grants of up to £10,000 to homeowners in their area for Energy saving improvements including solar panels. This is a broad grant that covers energy saving measures including insulation, heat pumps, double glazing, solar thermal, and heating controls.
The local Authority will cover up to 100% of the cost but on average has paid for about 85% of the total install cost.
Home Upgrade Grant eligibility requirements
To qualify for solar, your household must not be connected to the gas grid, and usually has to have a total gross annual income under £31,000.
Your property must also have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E, F, or G.
